It’s true, wallpaper is back! Lately, we’ve been hearing more requests from clients who are interested in wallpaper, and we are LOVING it! Don’t cringe. We’re not talking about your grandma’s wallpaper from the 70’s. Thanks to new materials & technologies, stylish prints, and unique fabrics, wallpaper is an increasingly popular and refreshing way to reflect your personal style within a space. Whether you want to add drama, whimsy, or just a hint of pattern, here are just a few ways wallpaper is making ‘comeback’.
PATTERN AND COLOR
Soften or highlight architectural elements or bring clean, crisp sophistication to your room by adding wallpaper in patterns and colors. Geometric wallpaper is a hot trend that adds personality, elegance, and sophistication. Get whimsical with a flower pattern or more subdued with a classic, light-hearted toile pattern. Earthy botanicals and ‘mood-setting’ ombre styles are also on-trend.
TEXTURAL
If you tend to shy away from bold patterns and colors, then consider textured wallpaper. Adding grasscloth, faux suedes, and other textured papers make a room feel warm and inviting. Just look at how the wallpaper featured below elevates the room with softness and dimension.
PRO TIP?: Textured wallpaper is typically not kid-friendly. If you have young kids, a wallpaper without texture will be easier to clean.
STATEMENT WALL
Go big or go home! A highly visible, single wall in an uncluttered area is an ideal place for adding wallpaper. The sky’s the limit to unleash your imagination, whether it’s an on-trend grasscloth or a bold floral design. A statement wall provides a significant impact with less expense than covering an entire room.
SHELVING
Add elegance to a room with a subtle but stylish upgrade, wallpaper incorporated into shelving. This is a great way to minimize the visual chaos bookshelves tend to have while injecting some interest. Wallpapering your shelves themselves or the back side of the shelf is the easiest option if you’re looking to dabble in wallpaper.
PRO TIP?: If you’re afraid of getting tired of a pattern, apply the paper to foam core fitted to each shelf.
KITCHEN ACCENT
One of our favorite ways we’re seeing wallpaper used is in the kitchen! Wallpaper is an inexpensive way to add a ton of personality to a kitchen design. Just make sure you go with a vinyl wallpaper that can withstand the challenging conditions near the sink and behind the stovetop.
HALF WALL
Adding wallpaper to the top half of your walls works perfectly in traditionally styled homes where chair rails and wainscoting are common. It’s the perfect opportunity to modernize a traditional home. Look into 3D texture, bold patterns, or nature-inspired wallpapers to up the style quotient of your room.
BATHROOM
Are you intrigued about adding bold, show-stopping wallpaper but not sure where? Because they are typically a smaller space within the home, bathrooms are perfect for those wanting to ‘dip their toes’ into the wallpaper pool. Consider a wallpaper choice that adds a contemporary spin to a bathroom or go rogue and wallpaper your ceiling!
PROFESSIONAL INSTALL OR DIY?
Deciding whether to wallpaper yourself or have it professionally installed can be daunting. Here are three reasons that we recommend professional installation:
- Saves you time and money because hanging, cutting, and mounting require specific tools and great attention to detail.
- Installers are more knowledgeable about the types of wall coverings and how to handle things like adhesives, cutting, repairs, cracks, and drywall issues.
- A professional installation ensures your wallpaper will have a longer life and professional quality finish.
