Can you believe we’re already more than halfway through 2024? We tend to see a lot of trend talk at the start of the year but here at White Birch Design, we prefer to check mid-year after a busy summer of projects. It’s the perfect moment to take a step back and see what’s ‘sizzling’ in the world of kitchen design here in the Twin Cities and beyond.
Whether you’re planning a complete kitchen makeover or just love keeping up with the latest and greatest, keep reading as we dive into four kitchen trends we can’t get enough of. Go on, grab a cup of coffee (or your favorite beverage!), and let’s talk about what is making waves and show how we’re incorporating them into some of our most recent projects.
Wood Finished Cabinetry
Wood-finished cabinetry is experiencing a renaissance in 2024, capturing the hearts of homeowners who previously would have never considered a natural finish. While white and other colors are popular, we’re seeing a notable interest in wood finishes, especially light, airy tones like ash and maple. Reflecting a broader home trend of incorporating natural elements, the versatility of wood cabinetry allows it to seamlessly blend with a variety of kitchen designs. Personally, we love using wood finishes to contribute warmth and visual interest as we did in our Crafted project pictured below. This Eagan main floor remodel pairs maple cabinetry with a smokey blue kitchen island and quartz countertops for a comfortable, timeless elegance.
Counter-to-Ceiling Backsplashes
While there is a kitchen backsplash for every personality, one option we’re seeing everywhere (including our own projects!) is the counter-to-ceiling backsplash. Visually stunning, these tall beauties draw the eye upward, enhancing the illusion of taller ceilings. Subway tile, a classic choice that doesn’t overwhelm, is a popular choice for this application. We love choosing a subway tile with a subtle variation in color or texture, like that in our Lakehaven Northfield, MN kitchen remodel. The subtle wave of the finish transforms the wall from sidekick to main attraction, especially when paired with a statement-making range hood like the striking custom zinc hood pictured here.
Minimalistic Kitchen Hardware
Minimalistic, unfussy hardware is much like those classic pieces you have in your closet. Simple and elegant, uncomplicated kitchen hardware catches the eye with visual sophistication rather than flash. Characterized by clean lines, the use of knobs rather than pulls, is included in this trend. But don’t be deceived into thinking that simple means boring. We love pairing a minimalistic hardware choice with champagne bronze or other gold-toned finishes like shown in our New Prague, MN kitchen and main floor remodel project below. As you can see, there is nothing bashful or shy about this hardware choice.
Using Wall Sconces to Illuminate the Kitchen
While pendant and recessed can lighting are classics that will never go away, a scan of Houzz will quickly reveal the rising use of wall light fixtures in their place. Fueled by demand, there are some truly fantastic wall sconces available, making this choice a fantastic tool for adding visual interest and reinforcing a kitchen’s aesthetic. With statement choices like those shown in our Midcentury Roots Hopkins,MN kitchen remodel pictured below, it’s no wonder that homeowners are swooning for light sconces.
