Kitchen Island: What’s Your Type?

Kitchen islands have the power to transform the heart of your home.  Gathering, eating, preparing, and displaying food are just a few ways to enjoy a kitchen island.  As a  Minneapolis & St. Paul kitchen designer, we have seen kitchen islands evolve over the years and know how important it is to choose the right design.  The National Association of Home Builders reported that 76% of home buyers consider a kitchen island essential.

Not sure what kitchen island type is best for your kitchen remodel? Read on to see some of our favorite kitchen island designs that brought both function and beautiful focal points to our client’s kitchens.

DOUBLE KITCHEN ISLANDS

If you like to entertain or you have a large family, a double island is for you!  Not only does it allow for your cooking and prep space to be separate from your eating space, but it also brings a grand elegance to your room!

MULTI-PURPOSE KITCHEN ISLAND

Lakeville Kitchen Remodel Large Kitchen Island

A larger, multi-purpose island allows you to socialize along with preparing, cooking, and cleaning up meals.  Throw in crafting and doing homework while you’re at it; these islands can do it all!  Whether your island includes a prep sink, range top, smart storage, seating, or other features, a large multi-purpose island is ideal for those wanting an authentic ‘grand kitchen’ feel and functionality.

TWO-TIER KITCHEN ISLAND

Two-tiered kitchen islands offer so many functional and aesthetic benefits. When it comes to design, they can be used to help frame an open space. Sometimes, when removing interior walls, a kitchen can feel like it’s left engulfed by the larger space.  Using a two-tier shaped kitchen, like in our Rustic Elegance Twin Cities kitchen remodel project pictured below, a two-tiered island can provide structure to a kitchen space, acting as a wall might, but without closing off the room. In terms of functional benefits, a two-tiered island allows for raised seating without obstructing workspace and is helpful for using as a buffet when entertaining.
